Qualifications
Dr. Scott D. Wykes holds a doctor of philosophy degree in Counselor Education and Supervision with a Major in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Northern Colorado. This degree trained him to provide educational and supervisory skills to therapists and psychologists in training as well as for him to provide comprehensive and effective services to clients. As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and a Chemical Dependency Professional in the State of Washington he is able to provide varying degrees of treatment for adults and adolescents.
Experience
Dr. Wykes has been in the mental health/addictions field for more than ten years. In addition to this he has received intensive training from Gail Ryan of the Denver Children's Hospital, in Adolescent Sexual Offending and was the Program Manager for the Sexual Abuse Family Therapy Interventions (SAFTI) Program in Greeley Colorado. He served as the Program Manager for the Island Grove Youth and Family Services program, a 5 day fast track adolescent drug and alcohol program also in Greeley, Colorado. He has also provided counseling in churches, schools, jails and home based family therapy. Dr. Wykes has a theological background including graduating from Bible college and Seminary. Dr. Wykes also has a varied “other-centered” employment history to include being a police officer and a youth pastor at a Korean United Methodist Church.
Dr. Wykes joined Fountaingate from Northwest Family Life in Seattle. While there he served as the Director of the Chemical Dependency Program, as a group facilitator of the Men's Domestic Violence Perpetrator's program and also managed a caseload of individual, couples, and family therapy clients dealing with a multitude of issues.
Treatment
Many therapists soon discover that all the treatment models and methods presented in graduate school do not always fit with every client, or even with every therapist. Dr. Wykes is able to apply many theories and models to your individual treatment. However, he believes strongly that thoughts, emotions and behaviors are deeply connected and that if movement can be made in one of these areas, then change can happen. His work with men over the years has confirmed to him the importance of helping men get in touch with their emotions and he is able to do this in a humorous, effective and respectful way. He provides assessment and counseling for adolescents and adults in the following areas:
- Mental Health Issues including anxiety and depression
- Relationship Issues including separation and divorce, abusive relationships, male intimacy issues, conflict
- Behavioral Issues including anger management, domestic violence, and substance abuse issues
