Dr. Steve Clancy is a licensed psychologist practicing at Fountaingate Psychological and Family Services since 1999. Prior to coming to Marysville, he provided services in Seattle both in private practice and at the University of Washington at the Behavioral Research Treatment Center. Before gaining his license as a psychologist, Dr. Clancy earned a master’s and doctoral degree in education and held numerous positions in the field of education, including two years as the education and mental health coordinator for Snohomish County Head Start.
Dr. Clancy with his wife, Yuri, has two children, a boy age 18 who is a freshman at Seattle University and a girl age 14 who is a freshman in highschool. Both kids are a joy to their parents and friends and doing well in spite of the maddening attitudes and behaviors they occasionally fall into.
Dr. Clancy’s interests outside of psychology include attendance at all the kid’s sports events and at least a few Mariners games every year. He also enjoys hiking, golf, travel and reading.

Treatment Counseling Philosophy
Most people seeking psychotherapy are searching for a way to make sense or meaning out of whatever difficulty has brought them to seek help. They want to examine the patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that may be contributing to their discomfort. Many realize a need to learn new skills or further develop and utilize skills and resources for healthier living and coping. Typically the first two or three meetings are concerned with assessment and getting to know each other. At the end of the assessment phase some specific ways of approaching your problems, along with a tentative time frame, are suggested. Feedback is offered on any goals you have in mind for yourself, both in terms of whether they can be accomplished in therapy and whether Dr. Clancy is qualified to participate with you in that process. Treatment is a collaborative venture. Working together as partners in solving your problems leads to the most satisfying solutions.
Training and Experience
Dr. Clancy received his doctoral and post-doctoral training at the University of Washington. His doctoral training was in the area of developmental psychology with an emphasis on early childhood learning and social development. His post-doctoral study was in clinical psychology with an emphasis on treating depression and anxiety, marital and sex problems, suicide prevention and borderline personality disorder. His training could primarily be described as behavioral and cognitive/behavioral in orientation
Borderline Personality Disorders
Dr Clancy worked with and was personally supervised by Dr. Marsha Linehan for several years in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy for Borderline Personality Disorder (DBT). DBT is a very comprehensive set of skills and principles with broad application to numerous emotional problems.
Depression
In his work with depression, Dr. Clancy focuses on what has been shown in the research to be the most effective: cognitive/behavioral therapy including behavioral activation with possible anti-depressant medication as an adjunct.
Eating Disorders and Obesity
Dr Clancy worked early in his career with Dr. Allen Marlatt at the University of Washington in the Addictive Behaviors Research Center. The principles of relapse prevention and addiction therapy are very helpful in dealing with various addictions and eating disorders. Dr. Clancy has extensive experience working with eating disorders, particularly obesity. He both works with obese and bulimic individuals and does assessments for those intending to have gastrointestinal surgery for severe obesity. The two major types of present operations for severe obesity are vertical banded gastroplasty and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. There are patterns of behavior and psychological functioning that help predict the likely outcome of this particular kind of surgery.
